Fishing Resources, Clubs and Contacts

Fish and Game New Zealand is your starting spot for all things fishing and hunting, including licensing.

Just in case you forgot, you need a separate license to fish the Lake Taupō district. You can get it from the DOC website here.

Wellington Flyfisher’s Club is one of the largest in New Zealand and has a great little newsletter – Tight Lines. On-stream days and trips to other regions punctuate regular club meetings.

Our Favourite Places to Stay

The Creel Lodge is our favourite meet-up spot for flinging bombs into the Tongariro mid-winter. Set up perfectly for fishing types, with river access through the back gate, ample rod holders and hooks for gear, and a fish-prep room with freezer.

Social Media and Video

Gin Clear Media are masters of video production. Their Pure Fly NZ series is a superbly produced series and an aspirational look at some of New Zealand’s best fishing spots in the hands of experts.

Join the Wellington Region Flyfishing Group on Facebook for great tips from Wellington locals. Brilliant if you’re fishing the Hutt River and its tributaries.

POV Flyfishing NZ on Instagram has bite-sized videos of small-stream grabs. It should come with an addiction warning!

Manic Tackle Project are not only the local distributors for some of the best gear the world has to offer, they also have some really great advice. Check out their articles for a plethora of fishing goodness.

River Management and Conservation

Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) is a great resource for checking water flows and quality. We recommend searching on your mobile device, and adding the pages of interest to your ‘home screen’ for quick access later.
